Meet Mercedes and Kellie!

It's been two years since I've moved from Los Angeles to Detroit and I have finally found some extra time that I wanted to set aside and give back to the community of Detroit. When thinking of ways to do this I was thinking about how I could use my skills and what I've learned to better something or someone. That is when I thought of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit. Long story short, with my spare time I've decided to devote myself and hope to have a great impact on a child's life.

This is when I meet Kellie, and quickly learned she was going to change my life as well. Back home, I left a very large family and it has been a huge adjustment living in Detroit without my family. Having a ton of younger siblings, I've been used to helping raise them and I truly enjoy the role of being a big sister. I do miss my family dearly and since all of my siblings are still in California, I really wanted to continue my role as a big sister to build that connection and be able to give back to a child in this area and share my experiences with her.

Kellie and I have hung out twice since we were recently matched. We loved attending the Pistons basketball game together and I cannot wait for what's to come. I can tell already we're a great match and we both are going to learn so much from this process. I can't wait to be able to teach her new things and create memories so she can take them with her for years to come.
