Meet Mercedes and Kellie!

It's been two years since I've moved from Los Angeles to Detroit and I have finally found some extra time that I wanted to set aside and give back to the community of Detroit. When thinking of ways to do this I was thinking about how I could use my skills and what I've learned to better something or someone.

OUR IMPACT

MISSION

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit's mission is to provide children facing adversity with safe, strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.

VISION

&

BELIEF

Our vision is to see all children succeed in life. And, we believe that mentoring provides a pathway to hope.

HISTORY

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit (BBBSMD) was formed in 1974 with the merger of five local Big Brother Big Sister organizations from throughout metro Detroit, with a focus on Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties.  We are the largest one-to-one evidence-based mentoring organization in Southeast Michigan serving nearly 1,000 youth annually with site- and community-based mentoring programs.  All of our programming is rooted in evidence-based practices, further differentiating BBBSMD from other mentoring programs. Our mentoring model is certified by multiple federal government departments as an “Effective” evidence-based model in realizing positive outcomes for youth.

CHANGING

PERSPECTIVES

No one can underestimate the “power of one,” the effect which one person can have on the life of another. Did you know that Big Brothers Big Sisters improves the odds of children succeeding in school, behaving nonviolently, avoiding drugs and alcohol, and getting along better with their family and peers? That’s right! Adults who participated in our program as children report that having a Big Brother or Big Sister played an key role in who they are today by positively influencing their self confidence, providing stability, changing their perspective on life and pushing them to higher goals.

THE NEED

There are few other major communities as reliant upon the next generation as metro Detroit.  As our community slowly rebuilds, it will be today’s youth that will be charged with completing the recovery and making our area vibrant again.  They can’t do that if they are locked behind bars, addicted to drugs, unemployed and/or academic under-achievers.  BBBSMD mentoring is proven to guide youth away from these outcomes by providing youth with strongly-supported, positive influences in their young lives.  Did you know? The Justice Policy Institute approximated (2014) an average cost to incarcerate a juvenile in the U.S. in a detention facility to be $407.58 per DAY.  The average cost to sustain one BBBSMD youth/mentor match is $465 per YEAR.
