Big Brothers Big Sisters takes pride in providing positive role models for youth facing adversity, who cultivate progress in their academic studies, the avoidance of risky behaviors, and an improvement in their socio-emotional competency. Annually, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America recognizes a Big of the Year on both the State and National level. We are pleased to announce three-year, local Big, Larry Williams, as our Michigan Big Brother of the Year! Larry, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., a national and local Big Brothers Big Sisters partner, was selected by our National Office amidst a group of nominated Bigs throughout Michigan. “My only goal was to be a good example, serve as a positive role model, and take a genuine interest in a young man’s life,” shared Williams. “I know from first-hand experience the benefits of having a person in one’s life who believes in their abilities and is invested in their success. Akario has given me far more than I could have ever given him. Watching him realize this potential has been an absolute blessing. Having the opportunity to play a small part in his life has been a privilege that I will always cherish.” Each nominated Big has made a significant impact in the life of their Little. They are also dedicated advocates and fundraisers for Big Brothers Big Sisters. As the Michigan Big Brother of the Year, Larry will now represent Michigan and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit in consideration for the National Big of the Year Award. Announcements will be made in mid-April. On behalf of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit, we would like to thank Larry for being a committed Big, advocate and supporter of our mission, and most importantly, his Little, Akario.
